Layer by layer the story of why their father was killed, what happened to them during the time the killers were in their house, and how the family is coping, starts coming together to paint a heart-wrenching tale. The gist is that the violent murder of their father by two teens sends the three children and their mother to their dad's ancestral home. I was gifted the beautiful hardback set of these a while back and just finished re-reading the first book.again. This is still one of my all-time favorite graphic novels and if you haven't read it yet, I honestly can't recommend it enough. I'm re-reading the books because we just watched the Netflix show and it made me think about how much I loved this story. I suggest you let them know what you think of the change by contacting them via the Contact Us page. So good luck trying to find comics on Goodreads in the future. Thanks to some idiotic editing going on behind the scenes, the names of graphic novels are being changed to their subtitle only, removing the actual comic title and volume number from the name.

'If we want freedom, we need to learn from Hong Kong. When we free our speech, our voice becomes one. His message is clear- when we stay silent, no one is safe. His actions have sparked worldwide attention and earned him a Nobel Peace Prize nomination, as he continues to fight for what he believes in. Since then, he led the Umbrella Movement, founded a political party, and rallied the international community around the Hong Kong protests, which saw 2 million people take to the streets. While the adults stayed silent, Joshua staged the first ever student protest in Hong Kong to oppose National Education - and won. It chronicles Joshua's path to activism, collects the letters he wrote as a political prisoner, and closes with a powerful and urgent manifesto for us to defend our democracies at time of global flux and change. INTRODUCTION BY AI WEIWEI, FOREWORD BY CHRIS PATTEN Unfree Speech is Joshua's urgent call for us to defend our democratic values, whoever we are. 'Joshua Wong is a brave and inspiring young leader.' - GRETA THUNBERG Imprisoned on 2 December 2020 for the third time, read Joshua Wong's urgent and powerful story - the Hong Konger fighting for democracy. The urgent, first book from global phenomenon Joshua Wong - leader of the Hong Kong protests, Nobel prize nominee and TIME, Forbes and Fortune world leader - who will tell us how he took on the biggest country in the world, and why we all have a stake in the global fight for democracy. The most unique part of this story is that it is illustrated with gorgeous wildlife photography. This story is written with very simple wording and is in the point of view of the animals. Children will love seeing that the stranger is a snowman made by two children and they will also enjoy the fun treat that the animals get from this stranger. There are deer, many types of birds, and small mammals in this story. The animals discuss who should go and check it out to see if this stranger is a friend or not. The story takes place on a snowy day when it is discovered that there is a stranger in the forest and it has all of the animals curious. Stranger in the Woods is a cute story about a winter discovery made by the forest creatures. In honor of the fact that we played in our first significant snowfall of the year yesterday I decided to read and review a snowy, winter tale. You perfectly capture the glee, inevitable falling, and decision children face of “do I get back on or forget about this.” Did you draw from your own childhood memories when writing this book? Learning to ride a bike – without training wheels – is such an exciting milestone for children that I decided to write a story about that experience.īike riding is a rite of passage for young people and one I clearly remember as a child. In particular, during our daily walks, I witnessed a girl who had just learned how to ride a bike I noticed her progression as she became a better, more confident rider. The inspiration for Together We Ride is the children my husband and I saw riding bikes in our neighborhood during the COVID shutdown. Congratulations on your new book, Together We Ride! Please tell us what inspired you to write this picture book? Were you able to empathize with Yang's two protagonists? Did you prefer one to the other?.How familiar with the Boxer Rebellion were you before reading Boxers & Saints? How did Yang's work affect or confirm your presuppositions about the region and era? What do you think of Boxers & Saints as a teaching aid? Did it inspire you to research more about the events described?.What is the principal difference and for what reason do you think Pien coloured the books as she did? Lark Pien's choice of colours for the two books is pretty different while sharing tonal similarities. His depiction seems rather matter-of-fact and visually simple-for his subjectmatter, did you find it too gruesome, too cartoonish, or just right? Did you find the violence felt different when it was the action of the gods of the opera? If so, then in what way? Talk about Yang's depiction of violence in his books. Violence is a big part of both the history and the storytelling of Boxers & Saints. “Funny, hopeful, foulmouthed, sexy, and tear-jerking, this winning romance will captivate teen and adult readers alike.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Printz Honor Book for Excellence in Young Adult LiteratureĮleanor & Park is the winner of the 2013 Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Best Fiction Book.Ī Publishers Weekly Best Children's Book of 2013Ī New York Times Book Review Notable Children's Book of 2013 When Eleanor meets Park, you'll remember your own first love-and just how hard it pulled you under.Ī 2014 Michael L. My content rating: YA (Some talk of sex, but none shown)Īlyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. Genres: Fairy Tales Legends & Mythology, Fantasy, Retellings, Young Adult Published by Abrams, Amulet Books on 12/17/13 I say this because the book touches upon the supernatural or otherworldly happenings within a world that seems normal. I think readers who love a bit of soft SI Fi or like movies such as ET or every OA will enjoy this book. I also loved the descriptions of the animals in this story, they were easy to imagine and sometimes I found myself thinking ‘Awww! How cute!’ I also thought the relationship and love some of the characters had for their pets is something the author describes well, and you can feel how joyful the presence of animals are in their lives. I also liked Charlie because I think she grew throughout the story and really gave a sense of what was going on in the story I think he’s witty and has a positive take-charge vibe about him. Are they all seeing strange shifts in people that doesn’t exist? Are there other different life forces among the human race? You’ll have to read this book to find out. After Jack starts seeing things among people outside he decides to go on a journey of the City with Charlie and her friends to uncover the truth once and for all. She talks to Jack about it, who convinced her that she’s not crazy. The story itself follows Charlie who hears voices talking to each other. I also thought the author does a great job at mixing the human world with the feel of what else is out there among us. The story keeps you guessing as to what is truly real for Charlie and her friends. The Darkest Side of The Moon had me gripped from the first chapter. The Darkest Side of The Moon by Tayler Macneill She demonstrates how humans are neurologically designed to empathize with animals, and how violence against them goes against our nature. Akhtar reveals what happens when we both break and forge bonds with animals. Through storytelling that is entertaining, profound, and touching, Dr. Akhtar asks, what do we gain when we recognize our kinship with animals? She travels around the country to tell the stories of a varied cast of characters―including a former mobster, an industrial chicken farmer, a Marine veteran―and comes face to face with a serial killer. Feeling abandoned by humanity, it was only when she met Sylvester, a dog who had also been abused, that she found strength for both of them.Īgainst the backdrop of her inspiring story, Dr. Akhtar’s own story of being a young girl who was bullied in school and sexually abused by her uncle.
